New York City’s food scene is a treasure of options, and for gluten-free eaters, the choices are so diverse and so delicious. Whether you’re dining out or stocking up on gluten-free essentials, the city offers a variety of standout spots that accommodate this dietary preference. Here’s my guide to navigating the best gluten-free options in New York.
Breakfast & Lunch Hotspots
Friedman’s (several locations)
Known for its inclusive menu, Friedman’s is a go-to for gluten-free breakfast and lunch. Both their Chelsea Hotel location and the other restaurants serves up hearty classics like avocado toast on gluten-free bread, fluffy pancakes, and savory sandwiches, all made with care to avoid cross-contamination.

Friedman’s breakfast and lunch options
Dig Inn
For a wholesome, fast and satisfying lunch, Dig Inn is a fantastic choice. Their market bowls are fully customizable with fresh, gluten-free options like roasted veggies, grilled proteins, and gluten-free grains.

Shake Shack
Known for its fast-casual charm, Shake Shack provides gluten-free burger buns and fries cooked in dedicated fryers. They have numerous location all around the city.

Bagels: A NYC Staple that can be be easily found in a Gluten-Free version
Rico Bagels (238 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10016)
Rico Bagels brings the NYC bagel tradition to the gluten-free crowd. Their chewy, flavorful gluten-free bagels come in a variety of classic flavors and pair beautifully with cream cheese or your favorite toppings.

Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company (I’ve visited the 286 8th Ave location but there are many)
Another gem for gluten-free bagel lovers, Brooklyn Bagel NY offers bagels that rival their gluten-filled counterparts. Their quality and dedication to texture make it a top choice for a quick breakfast or snack.
Bonus point: they have plenty of options for vegan cream cheese made with tofu.

Sweet Treats & Snacks
Levain Bakery
Levain Bakery is a must-visit for cookie lovers. They do offer a gluten-free chocolate chip walnut cookie is thick, gooey, and utterly indulgent (and it happens to be vegan, too!).

Sorella Coffee (145 E 27th St)
Nestled in a cozy corner of the city, Sorella Coffee serves delicious gluten-free baked goods like cookies and pound cake, alongside expertly crafted coffee beverages made with soy, almond, or coconut milk. All of this in a super funny and warm atmosphere, with few spots inside and several tables outside.

Seafood & Fine Dining
Luke’s Lobster
For seafood lovers, Luke’s Lobster offers a gluten-free roll option for their iconic lobster rolls. Enjoy fresh, sustainably sourced seafood in a casual yet refined setting.

Senza Gluten (206 Sullivan St)
Senza Gluten is a 100% gluten-free restaurant that specializes in Italian cuisine, from pasta to tiramisu. I I tasted a NY steak sandwich and I wouldn’t say this is one of the best GF options in NYC. The food is pretty bland and the location does not look very clean.

Senza Gluten by Jemiko – 100% Gluten Free Cafe & Bakery (171 Sullivan St)
A small bakery near Washington Square Park with sandwiches and pizza options. It’s ok for a quick stop but nothing special.

Omakase Sushi Dario
Sushi lovers can indulge at Omakase Sushi Dario, where the chef crafts gluten-free sushi with premium ingredients and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a safe and unforgettable dining experience. Gluten-free soy sauce (tamari sauce) is offered on spot without previous requests.

Shopping for Gluten-Free Goodies
If you are somewhat like me, your favorite souvenirs are of the food kind. In New York it’s easy to find all kind of gluten-free snacks, treats and breads.
Whole Foods Market
Whole Foods is a heaven for gluten-free products. Stock up on:
- Purely Elizabeth: Grain-free and paleo-friendly granolas that are perfect for breakfast or snacking.
- Simple Mills: A favorite for baking mixes and snacks like crackers and cookies.
- By the Way Bakery: Fresh, gluten-free baked goods available in the refrigerated section.
- Tate’s Bake Shop: Their gluten-free chocolate chip cookies are crisp, buttery, and irresistible.
CVS
Don’t overlook CVS for gluten-free snacks! Look for Gluten-Free Brothers products, which include protein-packed bars and bites ideal for an on-the-go snack.
There are some spots that I had on my list but I didn’t have the time to visit. The most recommended to me (and that I hope I will visit soon!) were:
- Modern bread and bagel
- Thyme & Tonic
- Insomnia Cookies
With so many gluten-free-friendly options, New York City proves that you don’t have to miss out on iconic flavors while accommodating dietary needs. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, a sit-down meal, or pantry essentials, the city offers an abundance of choices to explore and enjoy.
