If you are planning a trip to the South of France, Antibes could be on of your top destinations in the list. Nestled along the French Riviera, Antibes offers a rich tapestry of flavors, where fresh seafood, vibrant produce, and artisanal specialties abound. France is known to be a hard spot for coealics or anyone who needs to follow a strict gluten-free diet. So here, I made a guide on how to survive on a gluten-free diet while navigating the enchanting streets of Antibes.
You need to keep in mind that not all shop and restaurant owners and waiters speak English. Even if this is a pretty touristic spot, it could be difficult to ask for dietary restrictions. The basic “gluten-free” translates as “sans gluten” (pronounced like sahn gloo-ten or /sɑ̃ ɡly.tɛn/ ) in French, but it’s always difficult to ask for modifications or to track cross contamination around here. So your safest options will be the gluten-free dedicated spots or the ones that make a business around these options. Or to stick to meat, fish and vegetables, which are always fresh and well cooked in most of the restaurants.
1. 100% gluten-free bakery: MISKI
A completely gluten-free bakery, with sweet and savory options baked daily. You can find there pain au chocolat, croissants, babka and cakes for breakfast, as well as several types of bread and pizza/quiche for lunch. Take away is the only option as there is no seating. Check their Instagram for opening hours.
2. Gluten-free options: Healthy Lounge
Healthy Lounge is located in the old town and offers both indoor or outdoor seating. Their menu is full of colorful and tasty options, like waffles, open toasts or salad.
A huge list of beverages including iced coffees, smoothies, and matcha lattes will make your choice harder. And to finish on a sweet note, they prepare gluten-free cookies and some gluten-free cakes.
The kitchen is small and they prepare also dishes with gluten, so you will have to explain well about the contamination. They speak English and are very kind so this shouldn’t be an issue.
3. Gluten-free options: Choopy’s
A fun and colorful American style spot with plenty of gluten-free options for breakfast and lunch. Pancakes, wraps and muffins are among many options you will be able to find, as long as all the latest coffee and lattes trends.
You can check out HERE the options on their menu.
4. Gluten-free option (sometimes): Nomad coffee
Nomad coffee is a cozy coffee spot with a Copenhagen style. It’s located right near the Provencal Market and has inside and outside seating options. Most of days they have one gluten-free cake option, but it’s stored in a fridge with all the gluten ones (so not safe for coeliacs).
5. Gluten-free option Mellow Factory
They offer an English style breakfast and have an option to sub corn bread. You can check HERE their menu with other gluten-free options like porridge and yogurt bowls.
A final tip for your French trip:
If you plan to leave from the airport of Nice, you have two nice options to eat there:
– Joe & the Juice: they offer gluten-free bread option with all their sandwich (contamination is possible)
– Mochi coffe: ordering mochis but also Japanese Onigirazus (a big sandwich composed like a maki)
